SWITZERLAND – St. Moritz & Kempinski Residences (2016)

After spending all our vacations of the past few years in hot destinations on four continents, I was looking for a vacation in a cool place this year.

With this idea in mind my husband and I took quite easily the decision to choose Switzerland as our vacation destination for this summer.
And we chose the alpine resort town of St.Moritz, a place "more than just a holiday resort; it was also the birthplace of Alpine winter tourism (in 1864) and has twice hosted the Winter Olympics", in the Engadine Valley.

We stayed at the Kempinski Residences St. Moritz, which prides itself as "the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity in a stunning location at the heart of the Swiss Alps."

We stayed at Kempinski Residences St. Moritz
Kempinski Residences St. Moritz
is one of the legendary five star hotels in the St. Moritz-Engadine area

Piz Alv, our deluxe 2 bedroom residence is a "... luxuriously equipped 160 sqm (1700 sqft)... two-bedroom residence with Alpine style décor and furnishings... two en-suite bathrooms and a guest bathroom... balcony with panoramic views of the Engadin Valley."
And indeed, Piz Alv residence was a beautiful space, with all the design details carefully chosen.
And, by the way, Piz Alv means "White Peak" in Romansh language, a Romance language spoken predominantly in the southeastern Swiss canton of Grisons (or Graubünden, in German).

I inserted a few photos of our residence below, if you wish to see more follow the hotel's link: Kempinski Residences St. Moritz - Piz Alv.

Besides very much enjoying our beautiful Piz Alv residence at Kempinski Residences, we had a very good overall experience at Kempinski Hotel as well:
* we started each day with an excellent buffet breakfast at Les Saisons;
* for dinner we tried the Enoteca restaurant which offers "modern reinterpretations of Alpine dishes";
wonderful indoor pool;
* I loved the Kempinski Alpine Spa, and I enjoyed a few sauna sessions there; the spa has the most numerous saunas I have ever seen in a resort so far -- with (a combination of) various temperatures and high and low humidity one will find the ideal sauna.
The Sauna World at Kempinski:
Finnish sauna (90°- 95°C, humidity 10%),
Bio sauna (70°- 75°C, humidity 30%),
Herbal sauna (70°C, humidity 40%),
Stone sauna (60°C, humidity 20-25%),
Steam bath (42°- 45°C, humidity 80-100%),
Laconium (45°C);
* like always on our vacations, my husband and I tried a couples massage -- we tried the Alpine Tonic Massage, which although good was nothing special yet very welcomed after one of our long walks.

The only dissatisfaction in general was the relaxation room in the massage area.
This area does not bear resemblance to a relaxation room at all -- it is basically a large public space, a hallway, too brightly lit, and although it is very little circulated one can hardly get the feeling of lingering after a massage... the state of relaxation achieved during the massage dissipates quite easily after leaving the massage room.

We loved the indoor pool at Kempinski Residences St. Moritz

This vacation was a much more active one -- instead of lounging around a pool and/or on the beach all day long, most of our stay in St. Moritz was marked by walks and trips to admire the impressive classic Swiss scenery:
* We took the cableway to Corviglia;
* We took the funicular to Muottas Muragl;
* We took the ski lift chair in Pontresina twice;
* We walked the St. Moritz Lake;
* One day we took a trip to Liechtenstein.

Muottas Muragl

At the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl we met a Swiss bride... and we listened to the sound of alphorn...

"With the passing of time, the alphorn almost totally disappeared as an instrument used by Swiss shepherds.
It was only with the romanticism of the 19th century and the revival of folklore and tourism that the alphorn experienced a renaissance and even became a national symbol."

One day we took a trip to Liechtenstein -- what a scenic drive!
Here the Vaduz Castle which is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein

Vaduz Castle in Liechtenstein.
The castle lies on a hillside 120 metres above Vaduz.
"It is the symbol of the capital and can be seen from far away.
It is thought that the castle was constructed as a fortress as early as the 12th century, before living quarters were added in 1287."

We attended the Roman Catholic Sunday mass at St. Karl Church in St. Moritz.
The church is located on the shores of St. Moritz Lake.

St. Karl Roman Catholic Church in St. Moritz was built between 1886-1894.
Here we attended the Italian mass, at 4 PM on Sunday.
