"She Says, He Says"

Since I have heard these lyrics,
“She says, ‘Do you love me?’
I say ‘Only partly, I only love my bed and my Momma, I’m sorry,”
(from the song “God’s Plan” by Drake), they have brought such a smile on my face.
These utterly simple and candid and matter-of-fact words, and the slow-paced and dispassionate and monotonous voice of the singer, capture so vividly the reality of relationships, and the questions and expectations within.

For my painting, which had the starting point in the lyrics above, I decided for a vibrant color combination – the primary hues, red, yellow, and blue – to convey a strong, straightforward, and undiluted message. With very large bright red letters I wrote “YES” and “NO” in the background, on a diagonal running from the bottom left corner to the upper right corner. I repeated these two words, written in reversed and on a smaller scale, on the opposite diagonal of the canvas. Several arrows connect and point to or from all these words and create rhythm.

I wrote the main message of the painting – “She says, ‘Do you love me?’ He says ‘Only partly’” – with black uppercase letters on a white brush stroke resembling a flowing ribbon to give movement, and I chose the black-and-white combination to create contrast with the rest of the colors, and to make them stand out.
